Until recently, her parents were unaware that their 11-year-old daughter had a congenital heart condition. But Shanmughapriya had a sudden epileptic seizure which doctors, upon medical examination, connected to the congenital condition, a hole in the heart. Fortunately, for the girl, the prognosis was good. However, the family, who live in a village near Pudukkottai in Tamil Nadu, could ill-afford the costs required for the treatment. They had a small farm raising paddy and groundnut and were dependent on the yield to provide for a family of five. Given their economic condition, they received some financial assistance from the state. Following a request from the private hospital that had diagnosed the girl’s condition, Hope Unlimited provided financial support that allowed the treatment to go ahead.
Shanmughapriya is now at home, recovering well and worrying about her upcoming school examinations. She goes to Grade 8 in the new academic year starting in June.
